Recycling Plastic #6 Styrofoam
One of the Plastic #6 is Styrofoam. In fact, Styrofoam (Expanded Polystyrene Foam, or EPS) is the large majority of Plastic #6, but it is difficult and expensive to recycle, so that recycling is limited. (I thought I was lucky to find a Plastic #6 location near by my work. But, when I called to confirm the drop off, they said NO to Styrofoams. Recycling Tip: Confirm before drop off!)
So, if mail-back is not your option, the best environmentally-friendly way to deal with Styrofoam is to re-use or reduce the amount of opportunity to get them.
Many household Styrofoam packaging come from food containers. So, for example, we can buy meat from a butcher instead of packed ones, and order the amount of food that we can finish eating at restaurant to eliminate the use of to-go containers. Additionally, UPS collect used foam “peanuts.”
Can recycling ever be simple!
